Brief Life Sketch

Mary is Angie’s great-grandmother.

Mary Ann’s parents objected to her marrying Henry Roper, who was a Mormon, so they ran away to get married.

They had 6 children and only 2 were living when they came across the ocean. In Alton, Illinois they had 3 more children, none of whom lived. They had 2 more daughters and settled in Oak City.

She had a gift for healing and brought many babies into the world in Oak City.

Mary Ann was quite a superstitious woman as many people were at that time. One superstition was that it was bad luck to put your pointer finger into a jar, so that when they used ointment or salve, her family was taught to use the middle finger instead.
