Brief Life Sketch

Alvin is Angie’s grandfather.

While crossing the ocean, Alvin's mother would put him in a berth to sleep. One day the ship rocked and a wave nearly washed him into the ocean. After being on the ocean for three or four weeks, the vessel struck a coral reef in the Gulf of Mexico and was lodged there for three or four more weeks. They ran out of drinking water. The Captain would take the baby and give him water.

Alvin and his family were some of the first settlers of Oak City.

In his later years, he got cancer in his jaw.

Angie Finlinson Lyman spent most of the summer with them at the Flat. One of her duties was to make an eggnog for him. She would taste and taste, as they had brandy in each one.
